Field Event Roles

Field events work best with 4 parent helpers from each age group.

The four roles

Helper 1 — Age Manager

  • Ensure helpers are in place before the event
  • Call the next athlete when ready
  • Judge fouls
  • Record results

Helper 2 — Tape measure

  • Pull the tape from the take-off point to the landing mark
  • Read the distance aloud clearly

Helper 3 — Equipment & pit

  • Retrieve discus or shot put after each throw
  • Rake the sandpit smooth between long jump attempts
  • Set and adjust the high jump bar between rounds

Helper 4 — Marking & high jump

  • Mark the landing spot for throws
  • Assist with high jump bar and mat positioning

Other parents in the group

All parents accompanying the age group should:

  • Give enthusiastic encouragement
  • Keep athletes off the track and away from throwing areas
  • Keep fingers away from discus cages
  • Supervise athletes between events with simple games like Duck Duck Goose
