Field Event Roles
Field events work best with 4 parent helpers from each age group.
The four roles
Helper 1 — Age Manager
- Ensure helpers are in place before the event
- Call the next athlete when ready
- Judge fouls
- Record results
Helper 2 — Tape measure
- Pull the tape from the take-off point to the landing mark
- Read the distance aloud clearly
Helper 3 — Equipment & pit
- Retrieve discus or shot put after each throw
- Rake the sandpit smooth between long jump attempts
- Set and adjust the high jump bar between rounds
Helper 4 — Marking & high jump
- Mark the landing spot for throws
- Assist with high jump bar and mat positioning
Other parents in the group
All parents accompanying the age group should:
- Give enthusiastic encouragement
- Keep athletes off the track and away from throwing areas
- Keep fingers away from discus cages
- Supervise athletes between events with simple games like Duck Duck Goose
