Field Events
Jumping events
Long jump
Available to all age groups. Athletes sprint and jump from a take-off board into a sand pit. Distance is measured from the board to the nearest mark in the sand.
High jump
Introduced at 9s and above. Athletes clear a horizontal bar, which is progressively raised. The Fosbury Flop technique is used.
Triple jump
Introduced at 11s and above. A hop, step and jump sequence. Consistency and technique count as much as distance.
Throwing events
Shot put
Available to all age groups (6s+). A weighted ball is pushed from the shoulder. Shot weights increase with each age group.
Discus
Available to all age groups (6s+). A disc thrown from within a cage. Discus weights increase with age.
Javelin
Introduced at 11s and above. Strict safety procedures apply — athletes wait behind the throwing line, no retrieving while others throw.
Implement weights
Specific weights and distances follow LANSW Rules of Competition.
How field events are run
Field events work best with 4 parent helpers per age group:
| Helper | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Age Manager / Helper 1 | Calls athletes, judges fouls, records results |
| Helper 2 | Pulls tape measure, reads result aloud |
| Helper 3 | Retrieves discus/shot, rakes sandpit, adjusts high jump bar |
| Helper 4 | Marks landing spot, adjusts high jump bar and mats |
See Field Event Roles for full instructions.
